J. Daan is a boutique, family-owned winery in the Willamette Valley

Justin and Megan Van Zanten

Justin and Megan Van Zanten were twenty-three years old when they started J. Daan Wine Cellars.  Justin had been working as a cellar assistant at a Willamette Valley winery and envisioned a family winery of his own.  He started with a modest 100 cases of 2003 Willamette Valley Pinot noir ($18/bottle).  Robert Parker noted Justin’s effort, “…the 2003 Pinot noir, his first release, is outstanding…”  Today, Justin and Megan produce 1200 cases a year and have added Rhone varietals to their repertoire.  Justin’s most recent Pinot noir, the 2009 Willamette Valley, was described as “…a primer for what should be looked for in Pinot’s essential elements…” by Oregon Wine Press.

The Van Zanten’s have worked to maintain prices that allow a variety of wine lovers to enjoy their wines.  Their 2009 Willamette Valley Pinot noir was listed as a “Value Pick” by Oregon

J. Daan Wine Cellars

Wine Press ($20/bottle).  They view winemaking as a tribute to simpler living and hope that their wines will play a part in reconnecting food, family, and the earth.  Their own extended family has played a huge part in the project– offering support, free labor, and lots of good meals.

Justin and Megan are proud to a part of a wine region that focuses on sustainable and ethical vineyard practices.  They believe in small, responsible business so that you can feel good about every sip.

Art Walk February 3rd at Bella Casa Real Estate Group

Canola Sunshine

After Art Walk’s January break, we are super excited to be back for the rest of the year!  This Friday, February 3rd from 5 to 9 pm we invite you to join us at 700 E First St, on the corner of College and First, for a great experience involving beautiful and local art, wine, and great company.

This Friday we are featuring Jeanne Cuddeford, oil painter and Oregon native!  The following short bio is taken from Jeanne’s website, www.jeannecuddeford.com.  Please don’t miss this event!

“I specialize in realistic/impressionistic oil painting. I am a native Oregonian and love the diverse seasons and temperaments of Oregon, which you will see in my work.

Whether I am painting gardens, landscapes, a still life, or orchards the atmosphere and spirit are important elements. Art is important because it enriches our view of the familiar and of the world.

The artist is a perceptual window. A dark, rainy day is not so gloomy if we focus on the brightly colored umbrellas. And just as a smile encourages the weary, a painting should encourage the viewer.”

The bio below is a little bit about Elizabeth from her own website, www.Elizabeth-Berg.com.

“There is a universal language that crosses all cultural borders. Held
within images are feelings, emotions that evoke, that prove our unity.”
–Elizabeth Berg

I grew up in a house filled with antique books and furniture. My mother was the great collector, my father a violinist.

My first childhood delight was to pour through the old illustrations, full of life and history and wonder. Those ancient illustrations left a most powerful impression upon me as a child. They gave me an insatiable desire to make art and create beautiful images.

I won the first of several awards at age ten. I was recognized as a prodigy at about eleven years old and accepted into Chiounard Art School in California, as a ‘special student’. I’ve had several wonderful art teachers. After extensive art history study, I could not be restricted to a single style.

So, for many years I have taken the influence of the illustrators of old — and the art history from many cultures — and developed a number of very diverse expressions and styles of my own.

My work experience is as varied as my art. I have worked as an illustrator for several publications. As a freelance illustrator I have created everything from commercial advertising, package design, children’s book Illustrations, covers, and characters… to corporate logos and everything in-between.

As a visionary my mind provides endless links to endless trails of images and solutions to all manner of mauscript, from imaginative fantasy stories to poems and educational material.

As an artist, I am constantly producing new visions and new styles for myself or for my clients. I especially enjoy translating complex concepts into visual illustrations.

As an art teacher, I have a unique way of working with each of my students, as well as the inexperienced. My wish is to help them to know that art is in all of us and it is easy to access.

I think I am a good communicator. I hope that you will give me the opportunity to help you get to the heart of what you want or need.

Thank you,
Elizabeth Berg

Newberg Art Walk at Bella Casa Featuring Artist and Photographer Ashley Nicole

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Please join us at Bella Casa Real Estate Group this evening for our monthly Art Walk event in Downtown Newberg.  We are thrilled to feature artist and photographer Ashley Nicole.  Ashley Nicole just returned from studying two semesters at the Aegean Center for Fine Arts in Italy and Greece.  The following bio was provided by Ashley Nicole.  You may also visit her website, myartprofile.com/ashleynicole.

Making a Photograph

“Whenever someone asks me to describe my artistic style I never really know what to tell them. I’m not like most artists in the way that I can simply set up and draw just anything. It takes me some time to decide what I want to do with a picture, how I want it to turn out. For that reason, landscapes or everyday scenes are not normally what I focus on. I like my drawings to be more than just an image, more than just markings on a page. With each new work of art another story is told.

I’ve loved to draw for as long as I can remember. The first memory I have as an artist is one of me tracing pictures out of my favorite coloring books onto a blank sheet of paper. Of course it was a much simpler view of art but I loved it then just as much as I love what I do now. I love the crazy creativity spurts I get sometimes when I’m just hanging out. I love getting lost in a drawing and feeling the excitement I get after finishing a picture and I start showing it off.

I have just recently attended two semesters at The Aegean Center for Fine Arts in Italy and Greece and it was a blessing to be able to explore new techniques and ideas with artists who share my love for creativity as well as experience a completely new culture and lifestyle. During my time there, my interests expanded into more than just graphite drawing. I became increasingly interested in photography, painting and printmaking and I now have a variety of mediums to express myself with.

I’m excited to continue to further my education in art and hope I have the opportunity to grow even more with each new adventure that comes my way.

So for now, while I wait for this new chapter in my life to begin, I only hope that everyone enjoys my work as much as I enjoy sharing it with them.”

The Forces that affect our lives, the influences that mold and shape us, are often like whispers in a distant room, teasingly indistinct, apprehended only with difficulty.” – Charles Dickens
